Marble Weizen 5.5%

I’ll admit I like wheat beers, I have done ever since the Mrs was at uni and the pub across the road from her halls of residence sold Hoegaarden on draft, meaning I drank lots of it! I’d say it (Hoegaarden) is still one of my guilty pleasures nowadays.

Anyway, this being a Marble beer I hadn’t yet tried I was looking forward to tasting it.

Imagine my disappointment when I poured the beer to find it dull and flat looking in the glass. Not being someone who is well known for drinking with his eye’s this didn’t really put me off, maybe it’s supposed to look like that? Then I tasted it and I was right the first time. It’s not meant to look like that!

Something had obviously gone very wrong with this particular bottle as it just didn’t appear to be conditioned at all, it tasted slightly oxidized and quite frankly a bit funky.

This is a beer I’ll have to try again at some point because I just don’t believe for second it was supposed to look and taste quite like it did but I made the cardinal sin of only buying the one bottle. I usually buy two of everything for situations just like this.

christ, that does look bad! Unlucky, I ‘ve just had three in a row and although the Dunkel could have been more lively, there was no oxidisation notes or ‘off-flavours’ as such. Bad times.

Thanks for the comment Leigh. I think/hope it’s a one off. My bottle of Dunkel (post coming soon) was spot on.

you like wheat beer? cool! me too!

I know that kind of disappointment. A bad batch could slip through every brewers finger. I don’t blame the brewers – many times wrong storage by dispatchers and stores made a good beer bad.

You are right: taste it some month later and let us know.

  4. David,

Really sorry you got a bad bottle of Weizen, we do have what seems like a few rogue bottles out in trade at the moment. Unfortunately its not all that easy spot the offenders when they are in the bottle store. Out of curiosity, you don’t still have the open bottle do you? As it would be helpful for us to know which bottle batch yours came from, if you do could you maybe let us know what the BBE date is on the bottle, this would be a tremendous help.

    Hi Tim

Thanks for the comment. I fully understand that every now and then a few rogue bottles make their way through quality control and there is so much that can effect bottle conditioned beers. Unfortunately I no longer have the open bottle and since my phone was replaced due to it being faulty I’ve lost all my notes which contained the details you’re after.

If it’s any help at all the bottle was purchased from the House Of Trembling Madness in York on New Years Eve 2011.

Sorry I can’t be of more help.

    Cheers

I’ve been a fan of wheat beers for a while since I fisrt tried them Holland when I was 18 (many moons ago now). I totally agree with you and I’m not blaming the brewers this time because I know how good they can brew down at Marble, I’ve drank enough of the beers to say that with confidence. I will be revisiting Weizen at some point soon and will do a follow up post with my findings.

    Cheers

    Dave
